Did You Know?

Have you ever met a bird that is totally amazing because it cannot fly? Penguins are the wonderful birds of the cold, and they are experts at swimming in the icy water! They look like little tuxedo dancers, wearing a sleek black coat on their backs and a bright white tummy. These chilly creatures are built perfectly for life in the freezing, frosty places far away from warm beaches.

Penguins live in very cold places, mostly near the South Pole, where the ice is thick and the water is chilly. Because they can’t fly, penguins are super speedy swimmers! They use their strong wings as flippers to paddle through the ocean, diving deep to hunt for yummy fish and tiny shrimp called krill. They swim so fast and so skillfully that they can dive under the water and come back up to the surface in just a few seconds to find their dinner.

When a penguin walks on land, they don't walk like us! They have short, chunky legs, and they waddle across the ice with a funny, comical hop-hop-hop sound. They look a little bit like a walking, waddling ball! Even though they are big enough to be very cute, they are not very tall—they are about the size of a big loaf of bread when they stand on the ground.

Some of the biggest penguins, like the Emperor penguins, are quite big and strong, and they have to swim really long distances to find food. They are amazing explorers who have learned how to survive in some of the harshest, coldest environments on Earth. They are true masters of the icy world and full of playful energy.

Real penguins are usually black and white, but you can imagine them wearing any color you wish—maybe bright blue or sparkly green! Now, grab your brightest crayons and let’s color your amazing penguin in the perfect shade for your imagination!
